Designing a collaborative and productive workplace
‘Samen spelen, samen delen’ – or ‘play together, share together’ – is a beautiful lesson taught in children’s playgrounds on collaboration and tolerance. It shapes young minds to focus on collective effort rather than individual acts.
As a society, the Dutch have a long history of working hard together. Solid ground only exists in a third of the Netherlands because its people made it. Today there are approximately 3,000 Dutch polders (reclaimed land parcels), created by enclosing and draining marshes, lakes, estuaries and the sea. These enclosed fields have even given their name to a political process: poldering, where everyone’s voice is heard and everyone moves forward as a group.
From playground, to politics, to organisations: how can we design an organisation to create a collaborative, healthy and productive workplace? These are themes we explored in a recent masterclass held in Amsterdam at a CRF conference. Our approach built on the collective wisdom of the crowd – to let hidden voices be heard and innovate based on signals from across the organisation, not just a handful of executives.
